The story behind Uncareer Path

Hello, and welcome! If you’re here, that means that you’re like me – a square peg in a round hole. Always thinking outside the box and doing things differently than everyone else.

My name is Annie. Growing up, I did everything I was supposed to do. I studied hard, got straight A’s, and went to an Ivy League school. But once I got my degree, the real self-discovery began.

In the 10 years following college, I held 9 different jobs in 3 different industries. I started out as an elementary school teacher with Teach For America, then left the classroom to make educational video games.

After spending a few years in the games industry, I then got into adult learning and corporate training. (Those riveting sexual harassment and compliance trainings? Yep, I made those.)

I saw my friends all around me staying in a single job or career path for 2, 3, 5 years and beyond. I started to think something was wrong with me. Why couldn’t I sit still and stay focused?

With every new job I got, I thought, “This is the one. This will be the one I stay in for 5 or 10 years.” But inevitably, I’d realize that I couldn’t quite do things the way I wanted or have the impact I wanted to make, so each time, I made the difficult choice to leave and pursue the next thing.

I stubbornly tried to follow a traditional career path for 10 years. Then, a few years ago, I left the corporate career path for good and struck out on my own to start a business, this time in another entirely different industry – real estate investing.

As an entrepreneur, I have found a place, a path, a lifestyle, and a way of being that suits me, my passions, and my endless pursuit of making an impact.

While many may frown upon “job hopping,” my experience has shown me that job hopping can be a great thing. Job hopping can help you discover your true passions, figure out what you were put here on this earth to do, and even help you advance your career and your salary more quickly than if you were to stay in a single position for a long period of time.

In talking to other serial job hoppers, I realized I wasn’t alone. This new type of career and self discovery is becoming more and more common, and the traditional career path is becoming a thing of the past.

It was in this spirit that Uncareer Path was created, to give a name to a phenomenon that’s emerging – “uncareering,” if you will – to give you a place to connect with others just like you, and to let you know that you’re not alone and that switching jobs or careers can be a good thing.

Uncareering means that you are willing to shed the notion of a traditional career path and the restrictions and expectations that come with it. Through creating your own uncareer, you’ll become more mindful of where you are and where you want to go, you’ll push well beyond your comfort zone, and you’ll create a truly extraordinary life journey.
